CHAPTER TWENTY

Hawkes pulled a quizzical face. Could that be right? The old guy had recognised them? He had not picked up that vibe, and he liked to think he was the perceptive one.

‘How do you know?’

‘He said he recognised my aftershave.’

‘Is that all?’

‘It was the way he said it. As if he was making a point of telling me he knew it was me.’

‘Did you wear the same fragrance?’

‘Foolishly, I did. I always do. Simone gave it to me. She’s besotted with it, and gets upset if I don’t wear it, or wear something else.’

‘It’s a bit thin, basing your assumption on that. But if he did, what do you think he might do?’

‘I’ve no idea. The worst thing he could do would be to ring the station, speak to Trev Tracey, and tell him the guy he sent to interview him and one of the robbers, was the same person. Maybe he recognised your voice too. Putting two and two together, it would make sense that we were the same pair.’

‘I think you are worrying too much.’

‘Maybe, I hope so. He also asked me to concentrate on retrieving his mobile, but it’s too late for that.’

‘Maybe not,’ grinned Hawkes.

‘You mean you’ve still got it?’

Hawkes nodded.

‘I told you to get rid of it. That phone is dynamite. Your prints and DNA will be all over it. If the phone fell into the wrong hands, together with King’s insistence we were the same pair; that would do for both of us. We could get ten years in nick. Do you want that?’

‘Of course not. But the phone could be cleaned, couldn’t it?’

‘Prints, yes. DNA, not so easy. Those science guys these days will find the tiniest trace remaining, even after a thorough polishing. It’s not a chance I’d like to take.’

‘I thought it might come in useful. If he’s desperate for his phone back, maybe we could say we were making progress in the inquiry, and the phone has been found, and will be returned to him in due course. You could make up some story about you found it on a local thief, who then ran off, something like that.’

‘One lie leads to another, Hawkes. It’s not a road I recommend treading. Where’s the phone now?’

‘Well hidden.’

‘Where?’

‘Taped under the bedside table in my room. No one will ever find it there.’

‘I hope you’re right. Here’s the lay-by coming up,’ and Brian slowed the van, blinked left, and the van eased into the empty lay-by and pulled to a halt under the overhanging trees. ‘Tell me you got into the room?’

‘Of course I did.’

‘Any problems?’

‘None, the key was perfect. You can tell when you operate the door lock it’s made to the highest standard.’

‘Give me the key.’

Hawkes slipped the key into Brian’s hand.

‘Come on; show me what you’ve got.’

Hawkes took out his phone and passed it over. Brian slid through thirty-odd pictures, before he said, ‘That’s disappointing. It’s all about the cattle trough.’

‘It would seem that way.’

‘Did you try and open the padlock?’

‘Of course I did.
